    Understanding Insomnia Types

    Sleep Onset Insomnia

Difficulty falling asleep at the beginning of the night. If you consistently take more than 30 minutes to fall asleep, you may have sleep onset insomnia. This type is often associated with anxiety, racing thoughts, or poor sleep timing.

    Sleep Maintenance Insomnia

Difficulty staying asleep throughout the night. You may wake multiple times or for extended periods. This type is often associated with stress, pain, sleep apnea, or environmental factors like noise or light.

    Early Morning Awakening

Waking up earlier than desired (typically 2+ hours before intended) and being unable to fall back asleep. This type is often associated with depression, circadian rhythm issues, or aging.

    Mixed Insomnia

A combination of two or more types. Many people experience difficulty both falling asleep and staying asleep. Mixed insomnia often indicates more complex underlying factors that may benefit from professional evaluation.
